It is quite easy to get to Central Finland and its main resorts, and there is a number of choices to choose from depending on the available time or travel budget. Jyväskylä, the main city of the region, is located 270 km north of Helsinki and 147 km northeast of Tampere. You can reach the place either by plane, train, bus or even by a small ferry cruising in summer all the way from Lahti by Lake Päijänne.
Travelling by plane
There is one airport in Central Finland. Jyväskylä Airport (JYV) is located approximately 23 km north of the city centre of Jyväskylä. There are quite a few flights operating between Jyväskylä and Helsinki on a daily basis and a number of charter flights.
There are no airport shuttles. The easiest and fastest way to reach the city is by taxi. To make sure you do not have to wait for a taxi, we recommend you booking a taxi in advance.
Another convenient option for travelling to and within Central Finland is renting a car. There are many rental services available. If you want to rent a car from the airport, you have to contact a car rental service in advance, as the rental service desks are open only upon agreement.
Travelling by train
Since the region is located in the middle part of Finland, the train connection to Jyväskylä or Jämsä is very good. The trip from Helsinki to Jyväskylä takes approximately 3 – 3,5 hours, and you can reach the city either by direct trains or with a stop in Tampere. Train tickets can be bought in a ticket sale desk at any railway station or online.
There are mainly two types of trains operating between Helsinki and Jyväskylä: InterCity and Pendolino trains. There is practically no difference in ticket prices for these trains, yet travelling by Pendolino takes a little bit less time.
Travelling by bus
If you prefer travelling by bus, there are many options to choose from. To plan your trip by bus to Central Finland you can either check Matkahuolto website or the website of a budget bus operator OnniBus. You can buy tickets at travel centres or online.
The Travel Centre in Jyväskylä is located right in the heart of the city, and functions as the only station for both buses and trains.
Address of the Travel Centre: Hannikaisenkatu 20, 40100 Jyväskylä
Opening hours: Mon – Sat 6 – 22, Sun 8 – 22
Travelling by ferries and boats
Once you reach the borders of the Lakeland (Lahti), you can travel to Jyväskylä by ferries or boats cruising in summer on the second largest lake in Finland, Lake Päijänne, and through a range of channels. Although this is the slowest way of travelling, the trip will be an incredible experience by itself, since you can enjoy amazing views of the lakes and islands.
Travelling within Central Finland
The fastest and most convenient way to travel to any of the holiday centres or hotels outside the city of Jyväskylä is by bus. Long-distance buses connect the largest cities and towns of the region, so a day-trip from one destination to another would not be a problem. Bus tickets are sold at the travel centres, online or can be purchased directly in a bus.
